Events and Programs

As part of its commitment to education, human rights, and social justice, HCDI regularly organizes or supports the organization of meetings and programs in this area. Selected recent examples include:

Climate Justice Networking Meeting

Working with VCAN and APCAN, HCDI organized this event in June 2022 to support networking and information sharing, strengthening collaborations across sectors, and raising capacity and awareness on climate justice and climate change.

As a small-island developing state, Vanuatu is extremely vulnerable to the impact of climate change including rising sea-levels and increasingly powerful cyclones. Vanuatu is playing a key role in the request for an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJAO) on states’ obligations to act on climate change under international law.

As part of the event, HCDI also funded participant awards in the Climate Justice Art competition.

UPR Review

In 2023, HCDI actively supported the development and submission of civil society input into Vanuatu's Annual Periodic Review (UPR) of human rights. This work, organized by SPC and VANGO, resulted in 2 joint and 4 independent submissions.

Women Hold Up Half the Sky

Collaborating with Sista, HCDI sponsored the 2023 production of a documentary for women's equal participation in politics.

International Women's Day 2020

HCDI sponsored a groundbreaking all-male panel program discussion on the topic “The rise of women does not mean the fall of men” – in line with Port Vila's theme of Wanem nao YUFALA save mekem blo yumi gat ekwality?
